Your Opinion: Can we be united against a foreign threat?

Dear Editor:

Whoa! How did we get to this point in our country! That answer is complicated and we won't agree. Historians will analyze the how and why for decades. But I know something is not right.

Democrat or Republican, black or white, rich or poor, whatever the demographic, we are Americans first and foremost. We have always united to rally against an external threat to our country. We were divided about entering into the war until Pearl Harbor. After that it didn't matter if you had been for or against the US getting involved - we were all united in fighting a common threat.

So what's with this lack of outrage about a foreign government hacking into our country's information systems and stealing sensitive information? I don't know if Russia influenced the result of the 2016 presidential election. But this is much bigger than that. I know it is reasonable to assume that if the Russian government hacked into the Democratic Party files and emails, they are also hacking the Republicans, the Defense Department, Social Security, and other US government systems. When will they decide it is time to use stolen information against the Republican Party? Or use the stolen information about our defense capabilities against us? Or use it to bring down the Social Security System?

As Americans we often disagree. Just look at the current debate going on over the ACA and its repeal/replacement. Having discourse, debate and disagreement over issues is part of our American tradition. When it comes to our country being under assault by a foreign enemy we unite! We put party affiliations aside. We need to insist that Congress order an independent investigation, similar to the 9/11 Commission, to get to the bottom of what's going on with Russia.

Americans are many things, but we are not stupid and we do care. Call your congressman and Sen. Blunt and encourage them to put party aside and to do the right thing. Encourage them to support an independent investigation. We deserve to know the truth.
