Your Opinion: Challenging Ashcroft on voter ID

Dear Editor:

The first election since Missouri passed the photo voter ID requirement was held last week in St. Louis.

I attended Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft's presentation on the new law Wednesday in Ashland, where he was adamant that anyone who is registered to vote would not be turned away for lack of a photo ID. We went 'round and 'round about it well past the meeting's end because I knew he was lying.

St. Louis Public Radio reported that "several" people in St. Louis were told by poll workers that they would not be able to vote without their government-issued photo ID.

I demand a public accounting from Secretary Ashcroft of why he thinks he can stand before the people and lie and get away with it.
