Your Opinion: Damage from rioting the 'new normal'?

Dear Editor:

Recently 150 people rioted in Berkley, and six people were injured during the riot that caused over $100,000 in damage. Only one arrest was made. Is this level of protection of our persons and property now the "new normal" we can expect from PC politicians and police?

The University of Connecticut says that it imposes and 18 percent tax on the tuition its students pay so that it can redistribute the tax money to those it deems more worthy. Why not reduce tuition for all students by 18 percent and fund the welfare with a more transparent method? The university is seeking permission from the state so that it can use the money to provide financial assistance for illegal aliens.

Unions offer a service/product. Shouldn't workers have a choice as to whether they think the service/product is worth the cost of the dues? If unions can't convince workers they get value for the union dues why should government force workers to pay the dues?

A group of many technology companies are joining together to fight President Trump's temporary travel ban. They are afraid that President Trump might limit their ability to bring over foreign workers under the H1B visa program. Under the H1B program IBM asks for over 12,000 foreign workers, at an average salary of $87,000; Microsoft over 5,000 at an average salary of $130,000; Google 5,000 at an average salary of $130,000, Amazon 2,600 at an average salary of $122,000; Apple 1,700 at an average salary of $141,000, etc. Why can't these companies find American workers to fill these jobs? Is this a failure of our education system or would American kids rather whine because no one is willing to pay them $15/hour to flip hamburgers? (I lived in Indiana 20 years prior to retirement. Indiana's 21st Century Scholars program provides students from low income families with four years of undergraduate tuition at its public colleges. http://scholars.in.gov/ One would think that the majority of young, low income, Hoosiers who want a four-year IT degree should be able to earn one. After that, finding employment and earning an advanced degree while attending college part time should also be possible. Easy, no, but neither was my working part time the entire time while I earned my four-year degree, with no taxpayer funded tuition.)
