Your Opinion: U.S. built on civil discourse, compromise

Dear Editor:

There is an extensive dirty laundry list growing in our country. From chronic inexcusable incidents of outright bullying and lying to swearing like a drunken sailor to abdicating the responsibilities of the office of the president to not bothering to read or understand complicated policies - from sea to shining sea - this administration has poked holes and denigrated principles that contribute to our goodness. We are a country built on the ideals of civil discourse and compromise, on making laws that promote the general welfare (not corporate welfare), on respect and sacrifice and decency. All this is in jeopardy.

Enough is enough.

It is time for our senators and representatives to take a hard look at the votes they are making and the rules of decency they are breaking. It is time for Blaine Luektemeyer and Roy Blunt to listen to all of their constituents - not only those who agree with them. Claire McCaskill and members of congress from other states have held town hall meetings/listening sessions. Constituents deserve a chance to ask questions and offer alternative ideas.

And the time for giving this president a chance is over. He continues to put our country in dangerous places, at home and in the universe, with his ego and his ineptitude.

We cannot keep going in this direction without devastating results. Resist this childish behavior. Demand maturity and honesty and accountability from the White House and Congress. Let's indeed scrub this til it's clean!
