Our Opinion: Prom and graduation: Keep it joyous, keep it safe

We're reaching the end of the school year, when area high school students eagerly anticipate prom and, for some, graduation.

It's a time of joy and celebration. It also can be a time of tragedy. But by taking a few precautions, youths can stay safer and parents can sleep better, knowing they've reduced common risks associated with the events.

The top risky behaviors commonly associated with prom and graduation are alcohol and drugs.

To their credit, area schools more commonly hold extravagant events that are safe alternatives to the alcohol-fueled parties that can result in disaster.

These events often feature food, games, prizes and, even, live entertainment.

The Council for Drug Free Youth, as part of its Celebrate Sober campaign, will have cards inserted into the pockets of rented prom attire that say: "Don't let this be your last dance. Celebrate sober."

Local law enforcement typically pay special attention to prom/graduation weekends, in an effort to keep the roads safe.

You, too, can do your duty. Parents, talk to your children. Set limits, and let them know your expectations. Talk to them about risky behaviors and peer pressure.

Set a curfew, stay in contact. Let them know not to step into a vehicle that will be driven by someone who is under the influence of alcohol/drugs. Instead, tell them to call you. Some parents tell their children they'll pick them up any time, day or night - no risk of punishment, no questions asked.

Students, take control of your lives. Rather than succumb to peer pressure, be the leader among your peers. Show them that you can have a good time without risky or destructive behavior.

Finally, enjoy yourself. Prom and graduation are events you will remember for the rest of your lives. Dress to the nines. Eat fancy meals. Dance the night away. Share the good times and the celebrations with your friends and the special people in your lives.

If you're graduating, congratulations. End this chapter of your life on a high note, ready to start the next chapter with eager anticipation.
