Your Opinion: Please allow job growth

Dear Editor:

Most new Missouri laws seem to be intended to create jobs, but HB 340 will do just the opposite, crippling job creating solar small businesses. Solar jobs in Missouri grew by 28 percent in 2016. We now have 3,200 solar jobs and 134 solar companies. Installed solar capacity could triple in five years unless HB 340 or another solar tax becomes law.

HB 340 will allow utilities to add up to a 75 percent surcharge (as much as $30 per month) for solar customers. In addition to costing solar users, the HB 340 fiscal notes report it could reduce state revenue up to a quarter of a million dollars in 2018. The fiscal notes show passage of this bill may harm all Missourians.

Elected officials normally support job growth. Please urge your senator to oppose any solar tax that would harm solar businesses and customers, while costing all citizens up to $250,000. Unfortunately, Sen. Kehoe supports HB 340, but he has not responded to requests to explain why he favors it.
