Your Opinion: Calm down on transgender issues

Dear Editor:

I have seen at least a couple of letters about transgender folks' use of public restrooms that indicate the writers' lack of understanding about the issue.

Transgender women are women, and transgender men are men, regardless of the package in which they were born. Nobody gets to (or needs to) inspect their genitals to make sure they are in the right room. Everyone without a penis goes into a stall anyway, so what difference does it make?

The fact that some people are transgender is nothing new. Transgender individuals have been going into public restrooms all along, and it's not been an issue. It wasn't until Caitlin Jenner's first photographs were published that male politicians, surely wanting to meet up with someone like her in the restroom, began trying to create legislation to increase their odds.

Get a grip, calm down, and move on. There's nothing to see here.
