Your Opinion: Wary of public funding for projects

Dear Editor:

It is seldom I agree with Mr. Smith, but in his letter this past Sunday, he voiced opposition to the proposed apartment complex on McCarty Street. He also did it for the correct reason. The project would not be viable without the city's tax credits proposition.

Similarly, the Union Pacific now has approved the bridge over tracks to the proposed island park. So far donations and other non-public funds have advanced this concept. I have no problem with how someone spends their own money or time.

But as soon as the idea of using "pie-in-the-sky" grant funds was stipulated, I balk. A park in the river that will periodically be flooded and damaged and require repairs and replacements should not be a city priority, nor considered for any part of public funding. Let it remain viable only with support of private funding.
