Your Opinion: Teach history at and about Lincoln University

Dear Editor:

Having read several articles in the Jefferson City News Tribune, I am writing to support continuation of the history degree program at Lincoln University. I do so as a Lincoln graduate and former member of the Board of Curators.

Certainly job skills are important, but knowledge and perspective are also critical elements of higher learning. Certainly the future is important, but knowledge of the past is equally important as decisions about the future are made.

If Lincoln University aspires to be an innovative and forward-looking institution, I suggest the university establish a three-hour credit course in the history of Lincoln University as a requirement for all degrees.

Topics should include not only the founding, the excellent teachers, alumni and athletes, but also Lincoln's status as a Land Grant university and the opportunities this status provides.

This awareness would enable a wider recognition of how Lincoln University is a truly great institution with a rich history and heritage.
