Your Opinion: Choosing lesser evil is still choosing evil

Dear Editor:

For a long time, we were told this just completed election was a choice between the lesser of two evils. In the end 90 percent of registered Republicans voted for Trump. Few in either party ever cross over. Democratic votes were depressed by 25 years of lies about the Clintons, the willingness of the press to pursue those lies, and the unprecedented involvement of the FBI director in sliming candidate Clinton, and fake Facebook news items all contributed to the election outcome.

A famous Jewish writer who covered the trial of the Nazi Adolph Eichmann, once said this about "personal responsibility" under dictatorship: I will paraphrase her point that choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing EVIL.

There has been a breakdown of American institutions. Millions of Americans supported a presidential candidate who rejected basic constitutional principles previously accepted across the political spectrum! Donald Trump won despite trampling on cherished American ideals, which include freedom of religion (he proposed a ban on Muslim immigrants), freedom of the press (calling for opening libel laws to go after critics), the rule of law (endorsing the murder of the families of terrorists), and the independence of the judiciary (questioning the bias of a judge based on ethnicity).

We notice our education system is not teaching civics. A public nurtured on civics and "critical thinking" would not have given Trump a pass. We know religious zealots attack our schools over evolution.

We know Koch industries uses money to influence science teachers to down play climate change. Civics is also under attack. In Kansas, elementary teachers are required each year to spend a day discussing how Christianity influenced the Constitution. The word "god" is not actually in the Constitution.

Conservative religious leaders bear responsibility for the election outcome. No conservative can get elected in America without significant White Christian support. Given Trump's known moral failings these Christians are "sleeping with the devil."

We have heard how Helias students voted overwhelmingly for Trump. These are children. This is what they learned from their mentors. Many right wing evangelical organizations heavily supported Trump. Pence helped that. He is a Dominionist who believes government should enforce Biblical law.

Recently I wrote about the decline of White Christian America. I could be wrong, but I am convinced White Christian support for Trump will drive more people away from faith.

Seems to me the Devil is winning.
