Your Opinion: Correct call on flag

Dear Editor:

Thank goodness for the majority of the county commissioners wanting to abstain from lowering our United States flag. We are all truly sorry and sympathetic to the plight of those that did lose their lives along with their families in the Orlando, Florida, carnage.

But, we do have guidelines as set out by the National Flag Foundation which lists when the flag should be lowered to half-staff.

Cole County also has a flag ordinance that was adopted in 2012 with the guidelines for the practice of flying the American Flag at all Cole County buildings.

I am in full agreement with Commissioner Hoelscher, who said "Lowering the flag to much takes away from its honor." Also, with Commissioner Scheperle that said, "I want to honor those who have served our country, but we can't lower it for every event like this that occurs. I do feel for those who were gunned down, but I don't think it warrants lowering the flag" [News Tribune Tuesday June 14].

Some of our government leaders would like to impose their wishes on everyone, as they pander for the acceptance and favor of different special interest groups. As stated earlier, thanks to the majority Cole County commissioners for standing up to their beliefs and the county ordinances.
