Your Opinion: Make English our national language

Dear Editor:

I call your attention to a June 7 article by Caroline May: "Census Questionnaires May Soon be Offered in Arabic - The Fastest Growing Language in U.S." (http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2016/06/06/census-questionnaires-may-soon-offered-arabic-fastest-growing-language-u-s/).

Quotes from the article: "Arabic is the fastest growing language in the United States. With steadily people speaking Arabic at home, the U.S. Census Bureau is considering implementing Arabic-translated census questionnaires by 2020, according to the Pew Research Center.

Pew reports that from 2010-14 the number of people in the U.S. who speak Arabic at home grew by 29 percent and is on pace to continue growing. By comparison, the number of Spanish-speakers grew by 6 percent in that 2010-14 timeframe. Arabic is currently the seventh largest non-English language spoken in the U.S.

The number of Arabic speakers in the U.S. has skyrocketed in conjunction with the increased immigration to the U.S. from the Middle East and North Africa. Pew notes that the growth in the U.S. Muslim population, which as of 2015 numbered about 3.3 million and was on pace to more than double by 2050, has also contributed to the rise in Arabic speakers."

H.R.997 - English Language Unity Act of 2015 was introduced and sponsored by Rep. King of Iowa 2/12/2007. Described as follows: "A bill to declare English as the official language of the United States, to establish a uniform English language rule for naturalization, and to avoid misconstructions of the English language texts of the laws of the United States, pursuant to Congress' powers to provide for the general welfare of the United States and to establish a uniform rule of naturalization under article I, section 8, of the Constitution."

The status of this bill can be followed on http://us-english.org/view/310.

A quote by Theodore Roosevelt: "There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americans The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities. We have but one flag. We must also learn one language and that language is English." (http://www.us-english.org/inc/official/quotes/)

If America is to survive as a country, it's critical for H.R. 997 be passed!

God save America!
