Your Opinion: Confederate display appalling

Dear Editor:

It's summer and tourists will be visiting Jefferson City. I find it appalling that the Trading Post downtown displays Confederate merchandise.

Some will argue that the Confederate flag represents their heritage and that the Civil War was about states' rights, not slavery.

The war was about the right of the southern states to continue to base their economy on slavery, to exploit human beings and brutally mistreat them.

If it had been about states' rights, and the south lost, which we all know they did, the result would have been the abolishment of state legislatures, and state laws would no longer exist.

I invite the welcoming citizens of Jefferson City to join me in appealing to the mayor, the City Council, and the Downtown Business Association to influence the shop owner to get rid of the hateful display.
