Your Opinion: City sales tax extension favored

Dear Editor:

In the course of my life I have had the opportunity to travel and visit many of the historic places that I was initially introduced to as a student. What I soon realized is that the great civilizations were committed to investing in their infrastructure. You may recall hearing that all roads lead to Rome. Indeed they did. And those roads were built and maintained because the people they served were willing to pay for them.

Jefferson City passed a half-cent sales tax in 1986 that has not only funded significant improvement in our roads along Highway 179, Mission Drive, Lafayette Street and the East McCarty streetscape - it has also funded modern fire and police equipment for our men and women who serve and protect and defend us.

Jefferson City may never be compared to Rome or Athens or ancient Babylon. But like those great civilizations we have the opportunity to commit to our future.

Let's do our part in seeing that Jefferson City is a community that will thrive for generations to come because we cared enough to invest in our future today.

Vote yes for Prop 1 on Tuesday.
