Your Opinion: Support capital improvement tax

Dear Editor:

On Aug. 2 the citizens of Jefferson City will go to the polls and vote on Proposition 1 to renew our capital improvements funding source. The voters have strongly supported this tax since 1986 and it is important to renew it again.

Looking back over the past three decades, we have seen how valuable capital improvements have been to our city. When we consider funds from these taxes have enabled the construction of the Missouri 179 connector, West Edgewood and Wildwood thoroughfares, the U.S. 50/63 and Lafayette interchange, East McCarty rehabilitation, and countless other maintenance and betterment projects over our 250 miles of roads we see a strong direct impact.

In addition to public works projects, this tax also supports vital public safety needs such as fire apparatus and police equipment to keep us safe. As a father of two wonderful children, I cannot imagine a community without great parks for them to get outside and explore, a nice greenway along a beautiful creek where they can ride their bikes, or ball fields for them to play with their friends.

All these projects create the fabric of a vibrant community we all enjoy. Please help build a better community by voting "yes" on Proposition 1 Aug. 2.
