Our Opinion: Summer reading programs span all ages

Just as it is never too late to develop a passion for reading, it is not too late to join the Missouri River Regional Library's summer reading programs.

The library is hosting three programs - for children, teens and adults - throughout the summer. And, although the programs for children and teens began in late May, Angie Bayne, children's librarian, said readers are welcome to join throughout the duration of the programs.

Each program is named with an imperative. They include:

On Your Mark, Get Set Read. The reading club for children ages 3-12 continues through July 30. In addition to experiencing the joys of reading, youngsters who participate will be helping the library with pet adoptions.

Readers not only will be rewarded with a prize bag of free books, bookmarks, stickers and food coupons, but they also will help the library donate bags of items for people who adopt from the Jefferson City Animal Shelter.

In addition, craft events and activities will show children how to create leashes and toys for shelter animals.

Get in the Game. Read. The summer reading program for teens, according to MRRL, is "all about games, whether it be video games, board games or sports, with a bit of reading thrown in!"

Teens will be eligible for prizes by filling out bingo cards, which must be complete by July 30, when the program ends. The deadline to pick up prizes is Aug. 15.

Exercise your Mind. The summer reading program for adults features a Paper White E-Reader as its grand prize.

Other prizes for participants who complete their reading logs include gift certificates from a number of local businesses and eligibility to participate in raffles.

More information about the reading programs is available online at mrrl.org or by calling the library at 634-2464 and requesting the librarian overseeing the specific program.

Reading is a precious asset available to anyone at no cost.

It improves literacy, provides enjoyment and sparks creativity.

Summer vacation and the library's reading programs offer a splendid combination to stimulate the mind and let your imagination soar.
