3 seeking 2 seats on Prairie Home school board

Three candidates are seeking two three-year terms on the Prairie Home Board of Education in the April 2 election.

Incumbents Patrick Twenter and Donald "Will" Simmons will face challenger Steve McDannold.

Twenter has served one term on the board.

"I have served three years as a board member and feel that I can serve the district's needs even better in a second term," he said.

Twenter, 50, has been married to Holly (Graff) Twenter for 23 years, They have three children; one attends Missouri State University, one is a junior at Prairie Home and the third is a second-grader at St. Peter & Paul in Boonville.

Twenter, who was born and raised in Boonville, has lived in the Prairie Home School District for 23 years, and has worked at Cooper County for 17 years.

Simmons is seeking his third term on the board.

"I love Prairie Home, the school, the community, everything about it," Simmons said. "I want our school to be great and our students to have as many opportunities open to them as possible.

"I have learned a lot in the past six years, and I want to continue to learn and provide the best guidance for the school that I can," he said.

Simmons, 41, who has lived in Prairie Home all of his life, is married to Nina Simmons. They have a daughter who attends Prairie Home and a son who graduated from Prairie Home a couple of years ago.

McDannold, 68, has worked 36 years as an educator and with school boards and other educational boards at Mexico Public Schools.

"I was tasked with evaluating programs and personnel," he said. "This, of course, necessitated closely working with other staff members as well as school board members and attending all school board meetings."

McDannold also worked at the Moberly Public School District as an assistant superintendent and was on the board of the Missouri Administrators of Special Education for eight years. He served on the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Educations Advisory Board for six years, as well as the Missouri School Board Advisory Committee.

"That's a fair amount of time working with school boards," he said.

McDannold, who is from Vandalia and went to Kirksville to obtain a master's degree in communication disorders, went to theUniversity of Missouri for advanced degree in educational administration.

He has been married to his wife, Marti, for 44 years, and they have two sons and three grandchildren.
