The U.S. Coast Guard has closed the Missouri River to all boat traffic between St. Louis and north of Kansas City - between miles markers 0.0 and 380.

The Coast Guard's Heartland 8th District, based in New Orleans, tweeted Sunday that the stretch of river would be closed starting that day, "due to extremely high water levels and fast-moving currents."

A Facebook post by the Osage County Sheriff's Office on Monday shared more information from the Coast Guard.

In addition to the high water hazards, "vessel traffic may cause damage to or overtopping of flood control levees. The closure will remain in effect until the water levels decrease to a safe condition as determined by the Captain of the Port, in consultation with the Army Corps of Engineers," according to the information.

The Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River Command Center will share changes in flood conditions in broadcast and online notices for mariners.

If a need arises for a vessel to move within the closed area of the Missouri River, "you must contact the Command Center at 314-269-2332 or VHF Channel 16 to request clearance from the Captain of the Port," according to the information shared by the Osage County Sheriff's Office.

The National Weather Service forecast Monday that the Missouri River would crest today at about 32.7 feet, but still in major flood stage of 30 feet or more through about Friday.

The river was forecast to be in moderate flooding of 25 feet or more through June 12.

The Osage River at Mari-Osa Campground was forecast Monday to rise from a still major flood of less than 29 feet to a crest of 32 feet sometime Friday into Saturday.

The Osage River near St. Thomas was at 18.4 feet on Monday, and was forecast to rise to 26.5 feet Saturday. Minor flood stage at that location is 23 feet.
