South Lincoln Street between East High Street and Willcoxon Drive in Jefferson City was closed Thursday afternoon due to a stream bank slide, causing settlement in the pavement.
The street will be closed until further notice, and drivers will have to find alternate routes around the area.
"It's like what was seen in 2015 when Lower Bottom Road was closed in Cole County following a slide after heavy rains, but this is not as bad as that situation," Britt Smith, Jefferson City Public Works Operations Division director, said. "Lincoln has a branch of Boggs Creek running nearby it. The slide went almost all the way across the road. It was about a 60- to 70-foot-long area."
Smith said Missouri American Water Company was called due to concern about a possible break in the water line that runs in the street.
"We cut off the line because, had it broken, it would have made a mess," he said.
Smith said the city is working with an engineering firm to determine the best course of action.
"It will be a while to get this fixed," Smith said. "We wanted to make sure things were safe and no one would be in danger. The water line was the biggest concern. It will be an inconvenience for local residents. We'll do everything to move quickly, but we want it to be done right."
Outside of city limits, more Cole County roads have been closed following this week's flooding.
Road closures, as of Thursday afternoon, included Payne Road in the 8700 block, North Branch Road in the 11100 block, Loesch Road in the 5500 block, Bainer Road in the 5900 block, Zion Road in the 3100 block, Buffalo Road in the 6100 block, Deer Run Road in the 14500 block, Waterford Road in the 1400 block, Murphy Ford Road in the 1300 block, Meadows Ford Road in the 2800 block, East Lohman Road in the 7900 block, Rockhouse Spur in the 14100 block, Engineers Road in the 9500 block, Railroad Street in the 9200 block, Water Street in the 2100 block, Vaughn Ford Road in the 7400 block, New Hope Road in the 7000 block and Cole Junction Road in the 1300 block.
