A Jefferson City man was being held Thursday in the Cole County Jail, as police asked prosecutors to file several charges following a sexual assault.

Police said they asked the Cole County Prosecutor's Office to file first-degree rape and sodomy charges, as well as felonious restraint and armed criminal action charges, against the 40-year-old man.

As of Thursday evening, those charges had not yet been filed.

Police said the man was arrested after being found by patrol officers and members of the police department's Community Action Team.

Officers were called to a home in the 600 block of Belmont Street just after 6 a.m. Thursday for a "possible intruder in the residence."

When they arrived, police said, the suspect had fled the area.

Residents told police a masked man had entered the home and sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl who lives there. She was not identified in the police news release.

Police reported the victim told investigators the man "forced himself upon her against her will," threatened her with a handgun and took her cellphone to prevent her from calling anyone.

Officers said the suspect also was living at the residence.

The police news release said the man had discarded a gun before he was found, but detectives later located the weapon, believed to have been used in the assault.
