Behind the scenes learning

What would it be like to be backstage during a production? How do the lights illuminate the stage so exactly?

For anyone who has ever wondered what goes into the production of a musical or play, Capital City Productions has the solution for you.

Under new ownership, the theater organization is furthering its community outreach with a set of classes on everything that goes on behind the curtain.

Beginning Monday, Capital City Productions is offering a set of six classes on Monday evenings for young adults and adults hoping to learn more about what goes into each CCP production and how to get involved themselves.

The young adult class, for youth in sixth through 12th grades, will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the adult class to follow at 7:30 p.m. The course fee is $60 for all six classes, and the nonprofit will help those who cannot afford the fee.

Each class will focus on a different theme and feature a different guest instructor. Lainie Vansant, education committee chair for CCP, described the classes as an "overview of the technical side of theater, including hands-on experience with things like lighting and set design."

Class themes include directing, set design and construction, and stage management. Featuring instructors who have worked on past CCP shows, the classes will provide recent examples of stage production.

"The classes explain what each person does, defining where those lines are ideally between positions such as director, choreographer and music director," Vansant said.

The new ownership of CCP is working to make sure duties within the group are more spread out and incorporate more people into the theater group.

Vansant described the new leadership as having "more structure to the way it is built - people have more access to leadership, so more of the community is included."

This set of classes is not the only new community outreach activity program coming from the nonprofit theater group. In March, Capital City Productions will host Intro to Acting classes as well as audition classes for dance, music and acting. In the summer, the group will host a camp for third- through 12th-graders that will culminate in the production of "Beauty and the Beast Jr."
