JCPD starting youth enforcement campaign

The Jefferson City Police Department will join other Missouri law enforcement agencies, through May 15, in assertively seeking out impaired drivers and minors in possession of alcohol.

It is illegal for someone under age 21 to possess or consume alcohol in Missouri, yet youth make up a significant percentage of drunk drivers causing traffic crashes on Missouri roadways, said Sgt. Doug Ruediger, JCPD traffic unit supervisor.

During last year's Youth Alcohol Enforcement Campaign, 10 people were seriously injured involving at least one substance-impaired driver who was under 21.

Missouri has a zero-tolerance law; anyone under age 21 caught driving with even a trace of alcohol in his or her system can have his or her license suspended.
