Write-in time: Moniteau votes face shortage of candidates

With the April 4 municipal election drawing closer, several positions throughout Moniteau County are open for write-in candidates.

Clarksburg tops the list - no one filed to run for the offices of mayor, North Ward alderman or South Ward alderman.

Jamestown's mayoral race also has no candidates.

Even Tipton and the Prairie Home R-5 School Board did not escape the lack of candidates. No one filed for Tipton's West Ward alderman seat, and Prairie Home has two candidates on the ballot for three school board positions.

When there is a position for which no candidate has filed, that office goes to the write-in candidate with the most votes.

Several area school board elections, however, have drawn significant interest.

Seven candidates are seeking three available seats on the Tipton R-6 school board. Those who have filed for the three-year terms are Clinton (Clint) C. Miller, Sarah Bestgen, Nancy L. Bookout, Jason Hays, Patsy Reed, Kent Fischer and Craig Wolf.

In the Latham R-5 school district, five candidates are on the ballot for three board seats. Candidates are Morgan Fulks, Donna A. Higgins, Amanda Bolinger, Bobby D. Medlin and Delton Rissler.

And for the California R-1 school Board, four candidates are seeking three available seats. Those who have filed for the three-year terms are incumbents Craig Ash, Philip Burger and Joe Kirby, and challenger Michael Irey.

Municipal races in Moniteau County where candidates did file include the mayoral elections in Tipton and California.

In California, incumbent Mayor Norris G. Gerhart faces a challenge from Charlie Roll. In Tipton, incumbent Mayor Jennifer Cary is up against challenger John Hineman.

Unopposed positions include two-year terms for California's Ward 1 alderman (incumbent Ron Baker) and Ward 2 alderman (Lanny Ash), as well as a two-year term for Tipton's East Ward alderman (Don Basinger), four-year term for Tipton city marshal (incumbent Edward Wiecken) and four-year term for Tipton city collector (incumbent Marna Williams).

The city of Clarksburg also is proposing one ballot issue, Proposition A, which would impose a business tax on all electric, gas, telecommunication, internet, cable and other public utilities in the city, equal to 6 percent of annual gross receipts.
