No word on local CenturyLink jobs amid 3,000 cuts

It's too soon to tell whether CenturyLink's plan to cut at least 3,000 jobs worldwide will affect employees at the company's Jefferson City office.

The Louisiana-based telecommunications provider announced Monday it expects to lay off about 7-8 percent of its 43,000 employees - roughly 3,000-3,400 jobs - according to an Associated Press report.

"We are not focusing on a specific group of employees or states," said corporate spokesperson Mark Molzen.

CenturyLink's Jefferson City office employs approximately 200 employees and serves in capacities including local network operations, consumer sales, business sales and public policy, Molzen said.

The cuts will begin with employees who accept severance packages on a voluntary basis. Those employees will be offered participation in outplacement assistance programs, according to the Associated Press report.

"The positions that will be impacted are based on the number of volunteers and will be finalized in the coming weeks," Molzen said.

Most layoffs should be finalized by Dec. 16.
