Grand jury indicts Barnhouse

A Jefferson City man has been indicted by the Cole County Grand Jury in connection with a burglary from a business and the theft of a vehicle from that business in August.

Chance Barnhouse, 22, is charged with second-degree burglary and first-degree tampering.

According to Jefferson City Police, officers responded to a burglary alarm at Rollins Automotive on Idlewood Court.

A broken window was found on the north side of the building.

The business owner, Greg Rollins, arrived and determined several sets of keys to customers' vehicles were missing along with $100 in cash from the cash register.

A Chevrolet Suburban and its keys also were missing.

The vehicle was entered as stolen in the Missouri Highway Patrol's computer system. The Patrol eventually found the vehicle in Poplar Bluff.

Patrol reports show the vehicle almost struck another Patrol employee who was on I-55.

The driver, Barnhouse, was traveling at more than 100 mph and eventually crashed the vehicle. He was taken into custody and was found to be in possession of three sets of keys.

Barnhouse told a trooper he was forced to steal the vehicle because he was trying to get to Florida to see his father.
