This weekend, flags will be waving high throughout the city in honor of veterans and first responders.

Operation Bugle Boy, a nonprofit honoring current soldiers, veterans and first responders, is coordinating three activities this weekend.

Despite the rain, the activities began Friday with the So Long Summer Music Fest at the Jefferson City Jaycees Cole County Fairgrounds. BOSTYX and Members Only performed Friday. Montgomery Gentry with special guest Rodney Atkins will perform at 7:30 p.m. today. All proceeds will go to SafetyNet of Missouri, a local organization that provides financial assistance to the families of first responders who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

In a press release, Chris Jarboe, president of Operation Bugle Boy, asked community members to start today by working up an appetite in the Tunnel to Towers 5K walk/run. Registration for the event will begin at 7 a.m. at the Red Wheel Bike Shop, 400 W. Main St. The walk will begin at 9 a.m. in front of the Capitol.

Tonight, OBB will team up with the American Legion Hall and sponsor a chicken dinner fundraiser, offering veterans an environment to reconnect with fellow service men and women. All proceeds from the fundraiser will be divided between SafetyNet of Missouri and the Quilts of Valor Foundation, a nonprofit that makes quilts to honor veterans who have been touched by war. Dinner will be served at 4:30 p.m.
