Westlake ACE Hardware on Wednesday donated 78 box fans to the Salvation Army, which will distribute them to needy residents.

"Thanks to that, we can give out new fans to people who ask for them," Lt. Christopher White said.

Throughout the summer, the Salvation Army has been able to give away a total of 138 fans.

Most of the fans go to elderly residents or families with young children. "Those are the people with the most risk to suffer from medical issues during the hot summer months," White said.

"The receiving people are very grateful," he added. "And there is more need than we have fans."

Funds for the fans came from Westlake's customers donating to the cause at the store's cash registers.

The hardware chain held the campaign nationwide this summer, collecting $68,440 across all stores. The local store collected $1,500.

There is also a cooling station open at the Salvation Army, 927 Jefferson St., for people in need.
