Starting Tuesday, Jefferson City residents will be allowed to burn yard waste, including leaves, grass clippings and small tree limbs.
Any burning must be done on personal property and must be attended at all times. Burning in streets or stormwater areas is not permitted. Open burning is allowed from sunrise to sunset, and fires must be extinguished.
Fire officials said one of the biggest complaints they get is fires left smoldering in the evening hours. Trying to determine the location of these smoldering fires can be challenging because the smoke will stay low to the ground and travel through several neighborhoods due to cooler temperatures and higher humidity during that time of the day.
Open burning is allowed through March 1.
