Oh, boo! Things to do for Halloween start Saturday

Looking for a safe place to take your kids trick-or-treating? Or maybe some spooky stories to get in the Halloween mood?

Check this list of upcoming Halloween events for the family in the Jefferson City area.

 

OCT. 22

Centertown Baptist's Fall Festival, noon-3 p.m., 1213 Broadway St., Centertown. Activities for children include games and prizes, a bounce house, face painting, pumpkin painting and a cake walk. There will also be a "musical pickin'" tent, where all are welcome to bring instruments and join the fun. Hot dogs, chips, popcorn and drinks are provided. A donation of $1 or one canned/dry food item per child is suggested but not required.

Hy-Vee Halloween Party, 1-3 p.m., 3721 W. Truman Blvd. Activities include trick-or-treating throughout the store, coloring contest, cookie decorating and pumpkin decorating. The first 100 children to show up in costume will receive a free glow-in-the-dark bag.

Trunk or Treat with O.C. Railroad, 5-9 p.m., 5018 Elston Road. The front yard will be decorated, with trunks open for candy in the backyard. Trains will run outdoors from 3-5 p.m. before the trunk or treat. Free.

Jefferson City Jaycees Trunk or Treat, 5-8 p.m., 1445 Fairgrounds Road. Bring your little ones for games, activities and goodies in a safe and fun environment. Food and refreshments available. Admission is $1. Proceeds benefit Operation T.O.Y.S.

Run for Your Life 5K Haunted Walk/Run, 7 p.m., Washington Park Ice Skating Arena, 711 Kansas St. Make your way down the Halloween-decorated path along the Greenway, where you'll be visited by goblins, ghosts and zombies. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for the 1-mile youth run at 6:15 p.m.

 

OCT. 24

Family Howlin' Halloween Party, 6:30-7:30 p.m., Missouri River Regional Library, 214 Adams St. Come in costume and enjoy free Halloween-themed carnival games, costume parades, book bingo and snacks.

 

OCT. 25

Family Night Trunk or Treat, 5-7:30 p.m., Cornerstone Baptist Church, 4930 Old Lohman Road. There will be a hot dog roast, games, face painting and cookie decorating. Adults may decorate the trunks of their vehicles and hand out candy to the children. Children may dress in costume but nothing scary or mean.

"Hocus Pocus," 6:30-8 p.m., Capitol City Cinema. Downtown Jefferson City's independent cinema shows the Disney Halloween class.

The Haunting of Green Berry, 8 p.m., 1824 Green Berry Road. Featuring "Thriller" and other spooky dances. Free.

 

OCT. 27

Thursday Night Live's "Zombie Night Live," 6-9 p.m., downtown Jefferson City. Zombie Night Live kicks off with live music by The Many Colored Death, followed by '80s tribute band Members Only. Around 6:40 p.m., an influx of zombies will spontaneously combust into jerky movements that resemble a choreographed routine conducted by Larinda McRaven. Guests of all ages are encouraged to dress as zombies.

 

OCT. 28

Holyween: An Alternative Halloween Event, 6-8 p.m., Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 1529 Southwest Blvd. This is a parents' time off event for children ages 3-12. The meal starts at 6 p.m. and is followed by stories, songs, games and crafts. Children may come in non-scary costumes.

The Haunting of Green Berry, 8 p.m., 1824 Green Berry Road. Featuring "Thriller" and other spooky dances. Free.

Field of Screams, 8 p.m.-midnight, Taos Countryside Park. All proceeds from this out-of-the-ordinary haunted house benefit the Taos Countryside Park. Recommended for ages 10 and older. Cost is $5 per person.

 

OCT. 29

Zonta Zombie 5K, 7:30-10:30 a.m., Memorial Park. Registration fee is $25. Proceeds will support the Zonta International Foundation.

What's Going On? Spooktacular Nature, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Runge Nature Center, 330 Commerce Drive. Learn about spiders, snakes, scorpions, bats and owls at this free event for all ages.

Harvest Fest, 2-5 p.m., Southridge Baptist Church, 1815 Vieth Drive. All are encouraged to wear costumes and enjoy photos, games, prizes and hot dogs.

Spooky Tales: A Halloween Event, 3-4 p.m., Missouri State Museum, 201 W. Capitol Ave. Join museum interpreters for spine-tingling tales focusing on Missouri's folklore from the book series "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark." Free, for ages 8-12.

Holts Summit Lions Club Trunk or Treat, 4-6 p.m., 116 E. Hillcrest Ave., Holts Summit. This indoor trunk or treat is free for children of all ages.

Family-Friendly Halloween Trail and Maze, 4-6 p.m., Westphalia Trading Co., 1343 U.S. 63, Westphalia. Children who come in costume between 4-6 p.m. will get candy. Then the Haunted Trail and Maze, for ages 13 and older, will open 7-9 p.m. Cost for the maze is $3 for ages 2 and older.

Eldon Elementary PTO Trunk-or-Treat, 6-8 p.m., 409 E. 15th St., Eldon. Enjoy a free, family-friendly night of trick-or-treating.

OCT. 30

JCPD Hayride and Haunted Hallway, 2:30-8 p.m., Jefferson City Police Department, 401 Monroe St. The JCPD will host hayrides from the department parking lot from 2:30-5:30 p.m. JCPD personnel will be in the parking lot at 5 p.m. to host a children's costume contest. After the hayride and costume contest, the annual JCPD Haunted Hallway will be open to the public from 5:30-8 p.m. Trick-or-treaters are welcome to attend and meet police personnel as well as enjoy candy and books supplied by Scholastic and Wal-Mart East.

Halloween Trail at the Y, 6-7:30 p.m., Firley YMCA, 525 Ellis Blvd. Bring children in their Halloween costumes for free trick-or-treating, fitness challenges and door prizes.

 

OCT. 31

Trunk or Treat, 3-5 p.m., Trinity Lutheran Church, 803 Swifts Highway. Bring your children to enjoy hot dogs and chips, candy, fun, fellowship and games, and a bounce house, plus trunk-or-treating for candy.

Trunk or Treat, 5:45 p.m., First Church of God, 1614 Southwest Blvd.

Salvation Army Halloween Party, 6-7:30 p.m., The Salvation Army, 927 Jefferson St. Join us for a night of Halloween games, prizes from Scholastic, food and more. We provide a safe, family-friendly environment for every member of the family to enjoy. 
Entry to the event will be through the gym doors located at the lower back entrance of the church building.

Solid Rock Family Church Trunk or Treat, 6-8 p.m., Capital Mall (Sears wing), 3600 Country Club Drive. Free.

Centertown Baptist's Trunk or Treat, 6-8 p.m., 1213 Broadway St., Centertown. Everyone is invited to bring their best trunk decor - no scary costumes. Trick-or-treaters will choose their favorite decorated trunks, and the top pick wins a prize.
