Theft, drug charges among grand jury indictments

The Cole County grand jury recently handed down indictments in several cases, finding there was enough evidence to send them to the circuit courts for possible trial.

Among those indicted were:

A Jefferson City man charged after a Mustang Drug Task Force bust in August. Ross Duncan, 25, of 5500 Scherr Drive, is charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

According to the Cole County Sheriff's Department, task force members coordinated a delivery of 8 pounds of marijuana to Duncan. A cooperating source was stopped and found in possession of the narcotics in South Dakota and agreed to cooperate with narcotics agents. Under surveillance, the source met Duncan at Shirks Market in Centertown. Duncan provided the source with a large sum of cash in exchange for the narcotics.

Duncan's vehicle was seen leaving the area, heading east on U.S. 50 until he was stopped at the intersection with Nine Hills Road. A search of Duncan's vehicle turned up a large duffle bag, where four separate vacuum sealed bags containing marijuana were located. Officers later searched Duncan's residence on Scherr Drive and found unused vacuum-sealed bags, large and small digital scales, as well as other drug paraphernalia. During an interview, Duncan said he had purchased the marijuana from the source for $21,000. He also admitted to being a narcotics distributor and has been distributing for about seven months.

A Jefferson City man charged with helping to steal nearly $13,000 in items from storage units in October. Darnell Parker, 47, is charged with receiving stolen property and possession of a controlled substance. Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statements show Parker sold wheels, batteries, computer component parts and a radiator for scrap value to New World Recycling. An employee at the businesses recognized the items as belonging to him and had stored them at Hidden Storage on Madison Street.

The owner of the storage units was contacted, and he found seven units had been damaged and broken into. Officers went to an apartment on East Atchison Street, where Parker was staying, and took him into custody. A search of the residence turned up dressers, a cash register, Beanie Babies, quilts, numerous tools, swords, knives, ottomans and toys. Others who lived in the residence with Parker told officers he had called antique dealers trying to sell the items.

Parker was found to be in possession of marijuana when he was arrested. He admitted to police he helped carry the items to the apartment, but he did not know where they came from, although he did believe they were stolen.

Two Iowa women charged in connection with the shooting of a Jefferson City man in October. Prosecutors charged Karmen Hines, 26, and Daeqwan Smith, 22, with first-degree assault and armed criminal action.

Jefferson City police said the mother of Hines and Smith got into a phone argument with a Jefferson City woman over an outstanding $15 balance from a previous cellphone transaction. The mother and her daughters went to the woman's apartment in the 800 block of Monroe Street, and the victim, Marcus Green, began arguing with the two younger women.

A short time later, he was shot in the abdomen. One of the witnesses told police Smith pulled out a handgun from her jacket and shot Green. Smith and Hines then fled the scene - leaving their mother in the apartment - and later were stopped by the Missouri Highway Patrol in Schuyler County, near the Missouri/Iowa border.

Two Jefferson City men charged after a robbery in October in the Capital City. Kane Carpenter, 17, and Robert Scott, 19, are each charged with one count of first-degree robbery. According to police reports, the robbery occurred in the area of Capitol Avenue and Lafayette Street.

The victim said he was walking in the area when he was approached by two males who asked to use his cellphone. When he refused, one of the suspects threatened the victim and implied he had a gun, demanding his possessions. The victim handed the suspects his iPhone and electronic cigarette, and the suspects then fled the area.

Responding officers contacted the victim, who was able to provide a description of both suspects. Other officers canvassed the area and located Carpenter and Scott, who matched the suspect descriptions, a short distance away at Cherry Street and Commercial Way. Both men were positively identified as the suspects and were taken into custody, and the stolen iPhone was recovered. No weapon was found on or near the suspects. The victim was not harmed during the robbery.

A Jefferson City man charged in connection with a robbery in October. Corey Boston, 21, of Jefferson City, is charged with second-degree robbery, first-degree tampering and fraudulent use of a credit card. The incident occurred in the 300 block of East Dunklin Street.

According to Jefferson City police, the victim told authorities Boston had contacted him for a ride, and the victim agreed. As they were going along, there was an apparent disagreement, and Boston forcibly stopped the vehicle in the 400 block of East Dunklin Street. It was there the victim was assaulted and thrown out of his car, and Boston drove off with the victim's cellphone and wallet inside the vehicle. The vehicle was located about an hour later in the 600 block of Linn Street.

Boston admitted to being in the car with the victim, but he denied taking the car. He also claimed the victim let him borrow the victim's debit card, which authorities said Boston used to purchase items.

Boston was also indicted on charges in an unrelated incident in October. He is charged with first-degree tampering for taking a vehicle without the permission of its owner in the 700 block of Madison Street. Police said Boston took the vehicle keys while talking with the victim who had laid them on a counter.

The vehicle was found unoccupied at a residence Boston frequents in the 600 block of Locust Street. When he was arrested, Boston was found to be in possession of items that were in the vehicle at the time it was taken.
