Charges mount in multi-county rash of burglaries

More charges have been filed in connection with recent burglaries that occurred in Cole County and three other Mid-Missouri counties.

Zachary Schnieders, 20, of Jefferson City, is charged with one count of second-degree burglary.

Schnieders committed a burglary at a vacation home in the 9500 block of Engineers Road along the Osage River between Nov. 19-26, according to a Cole County Sheriff's Department probable cause statement. A number of electronic devices were taken, along with a gas-powered blower and an $800 fish finder.

Schnieders was mentioned by others recently arrested for the other burglaries as having participated in those crimes.

He admitted to being at several of the burglary locations but wasn't sure of the addresses. When shown the home on Engineers Road, he admitted taking part in the crime.

A search warrant was served at the home of one of Schnieders' friends, and multiple stolen items were recovered, many of which matched those taken from the home on Engineers Road.

Meanwhile, a Russellville man already charged in connection with these burglaries is facing an additional charge.

Stephan Whelan, 22, of Russellville, is charged with one count of second-degree burglary for a break-in at a home in September.

The crime occurred at a home in the 11900 block of Route W, according to the Sheriff's Department. A firearm, laptop computer and several items of jewelry were taken.

After he was taken into custody last week, Whelan told authorities some items he had taken in the burglaries could be found at a residence in the 100 block of Riverside Drive. A search of that residence turned up a set of pearl earrings that matched ones stolen from the home on Route W. Authorities also found a shoe that matched a print found outside the Route W home.

Whelan was charged earlier with felony receiving stolen property and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance in connection with these cases.

Others charged in these cases include:

Brandon Wilkerson, 21, of Jefferson City, charged with receiving stolen property, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Caden Wilkerson, 23, of Jefferson City, charged with second-degree burglary and receiving stolen property.

Hunter Ferguson, 21, of Jefferson City, charged with receiving stolen property.

Ferguson, Whelan and the Wilkersons were stopped last Thursday in a vehicle believed to be connected to a Moniteau County burglary and taken into custody.

Following the traffic stop, Cole County detectives and deputies worked on the investigation with officers from Cooper, Moniteau and Miller counties and served a search warrant at a Cole County residence in the 1200 block of Eagan Lane, where Ferguson and the Wilkersons live.

The arrest of these individuals led to several burglary cases from each county being solved. Recovered stolen property included television sets, laptop computers, electronic tablets, jewelry, firearms, cameras and numerous other items.
