A former Jefferson City man who was hurt in an accident this weekend as he was being chased by a Cole County sheriff's deputy was indicted by the Cole County grand jury this week on unrelated charges.
Grand jurors issued a three-count indictment for Brent Kevin Askam, 18, of New Bloomfield, charging him with second- and third-degree assault, as well as second-degree property damage.
The three charges involved July 9 incidents.
The second-degree assault is a Class C felony, which carries a punishment of up to seven years in prison. Grand jurors charged Askam recklessly caused serious physical injury to an individual by slamming him and striking him with a fist.
The third-degree assault is a Class A misdemeanor, which could result in a jail sentence of up to one year. Grand jurors said Askam tried to injure another individual by headbutting him.
The second-degree property damage is a Class B misdemeanor, which carries a maximum sentence of six months in the county jail. Grand jurors charged Askam with throwing a trash can and damaging the second victims's vehicle while it was parked at 312 Brooks St.
Askam is scheduled for a Sept. 27 arraignment before Circuit Judge Jon Beetem.
In a separate case, Askam was treated for injuries this weekend at University Hospital, Columbia, after he lost control of his 2009 Honda motorcycle at about 8 p.m. Saturday.
He was thrown from the cycle as it crashed into a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado parked on Gateway Drive in Apache Flats.
Sheriff's Capt. John Wheeler said deputies were trying to stop Askam for several traffic violations, including going 88 mph in a 45 mph zone.
When Askam was arrested, Wheeler said, he was also carrying marijuana.
So far, no charges have been filed as a result of the chase or the drugs.
