Huckabee backs Ashcroft for Missouri secretary of state

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee is backing fellow Republican Jay Ashcroft for Missouri secretary of state.

Ashcroft's campaign announced Wednesday that Huckabee is visiting the state for a June rally in support of Ashcroft.

Ashcroft is the son of former governor, U.S. senator and Attorney General John Ashcroft. He faces a Republican primary against state Sen. Will Kraus, of Lee's Summit.

Huckabee said in a statement that he's backing Ashcroft because of his opposition to abortion and conservative beliefs.

Former St. Louis news anchor Robin Smith is running for the office as a Democrat.

The primary is Aug. 2. The general election is Nov. 8.
