Grand jury indicts Young in inmate killing

An Algoa Correctional Center inmate has been indicted by the Cole County Grand Jury for the killing of a fellow inmate in December 2015.

David Young, 42, is charged with one count of second-degree murder and one count of violence against an offender in the Department of Corrections.

Because the Grand Jury is a secretive body, the probable cause statement is not made public.

However, the case documents show Young is charged with killing an inmate, identified as H.H., by striking and kicking him in the head.

Records from that time show the DOC put out a news release saying an Algoa inmate, Harley Holt, 35, was pronounced dead after he was taken to University Hospital in Columbia.

Holt was serving a four-year sentence for two counts of failure to register as a sex offender in Greene and Howell counties, according to a DOC news release.

The DOC website shows Young has been serving a seven-year prison sentence for possession of a controlled substance out of Butler County.
