Blair Oaks High School honored graduating seniors Ashley Holland, Sara Jones and Larissa Prenger as its valedictorians on Sunday night.
The three women were recognized as top-achieving students during the school's graduation ceremony at the Falcon Athletic Complex. The honor is given to the senior or seniors with the highest GPA on Blair Oaks' weighted scale.
Walking across the stage on Sunday night, the graduates were recognized for the efforts they have made over their four years of school. Principal Gary Verslues said the award is a measurement, similar to wins and losses in athletics.
"It's a way to recognize outstanding academic achievement," he said.
And if the honor is like a win in sports, then getting there is undoubtedly a competition. Students take the award seriously, working hard all year to separate themselves from the pack, Verslues said.
"There's a competitive nature (among students)" he said. "They like to strive for excellence."
