Bad checks put St. Louisan on probation

A St. Louis man has been placed on five years supervised probation after pleading guilty to charges in connection with passing fraudulent checks at branches of a Jefferson City bank.

Avery Winks, 55, was charged with two counts of forgery and one count of felony stealing.

A Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement shows Winks wrote four fraudulent checks at all four Jefferson Bank locations in February.

The checks totalled more than $9,300. Bank officials said they found the check numbers had previously been used by the account holder.

The victim told bank officials the signatures on the checks were forged.
