NEWBURG - The first time is pretty sweet.
The Tuscumbia Lions claimed their first-ever district baseball title Wednesday, defeating Macks Creek 4-1 in the championship game of the Class 1 District 9 Tournament.
"This is something we've been working toward since the start of fall baseball," Tuscumbia coach Matt Bailey said. "This is a great win for the team, for the school and for the community."
The top-seeded Lions scored twice in the first inning before a solo home run from Orrie Patterson made it 3-0 after three. Tuscumbia scored its final run in the fourth, while Macks Creek's lone tally cane in the sixth.
Zane Humphreys went the distance to get the win, scattering four hits without walking a batter. He struck out nine. Macks Creek's run was unearned.
"Zane threw strikes," Bailey said.
Patterson had two hits and drove in two runs for the Lions (12-10), who advance to Monday's sectional game at New Franklin (18-4). New Franklin edged Tuscumbia 1-0 on April 8 in New Franklin, with Humphreys taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning.
"We've seen them before, we know we can compete with them," Bailey said.
Game time is noon.
