BizBeat: Modern Litho honored for "green' award

Companies and consumers alike are finding more importance in going green. One local printing company has made significant strides to reduce its carbon footprint and has been honored for doing so. Modern Litho has been awarded the Kodak SONORA Green Leaf Award, the first company in the United States to receive the award.

Jefferson City-based Modern Litho implemented use of the Kodak SONORA process-free plate last year. The switch eliminates use of chemicals used to process the plates, creates a highly sustainable production and increases quality and efficiency. It helps save on water usage and minimizes environmental impact.

Modern Litho and Kodak's relationship has grown into a true partnership over the last 10 years. Modern Litho is often among the first to adopt new technology from Kodak and works with the company to make improvements where needed.

The local printing company was presented with the award in a ceremony on Thursday. Modern Litho was chosen from a pool of applications submitted from customers in the U.S. and Canada. According to Kodak, entrants were judged on a range of criteria, including management practices to improve energy and water efficiency, participation in local community sustainability initiatives and the use of eco-conscious materials and supplies.

Modern Litho has also received several third-party certifications through the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and Forestry Stewardship Council and prints their materials with 71 percent Bio-Renewable ink.
