Panthers sign TE McNeill to 2-year deal

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - The Panthers announced they've signed free agent tight end Mike McNeill from the St. Louis Rams to a two-year contract.

Financial terms were not released.

McNeill, 26, spent the last two seasons with the St. Louis Rams playing in 28 games with one start. He has five career receptions 36 yards.

The 6-foot-4, 240-pound McNeill could be a potential replacement for blocking tight end Ben Hartsock, who's an unrestricted free agent.

He is Carolina's first free agent signing.

Carolina's roster has seen major change in recent days. Wide receiver Steve Smith, the team's all-time leader in receptions, was released and three offensive linemen retired, including starting left tackle Jordan Gross. Safety Mike Mitchell, cornerback Captain Munnerlyn and wide receivers Ted Ginn Jr. and Domenik Hixon signed with other teams.
