Several area residents will be honored Tuesday as 2014 American Red Cross Heart of Missouri Chapter Lifesavers.
The ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Jefferson City at the Capital West Events Center, 1315 Fairgrounds Road.
• Two Jefferson City police officers, Brad King and Jason Sederwall, are receiving Law Enforcement Lifesaver awards. King and Sederwall risked their lives to save a woman trapped in a burning car Dec. 10, 2013 after a two-vehicle crash.
• Tracy Frank, a school nurse at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, and Trish Adamson, a school staff member, are receiving Medical Lifesaver awards. Quick response by Frank and Adamson saved the life of a young girl who was choking on May 13, 2013. The girl's mother pulled her daughter from the car and called for help. Frank and Adamson responded and dislodged an object in the girl throat.
• Kara Wehmeyer is receiving the Blood Services Lifesaver award. She helped organize blood drives at Calvary Lutheran High School where she is a student. Her efforts brought in 112 units of blood.
• Dezaree Curtis, a student at Jamestown High School and a junior firefighter with the Jamestown Rural Fire Protection District for three years, is receiving the Youth Lifesaver award. She received the Fire Department Medical First Responder certificate and an Outstanding Service Award.
• Denise Evans is receiving a Good Samaritan Lifesaver award for helping a woman who gave birth on the Missouri River Runner Amtrak train. The woman gave birth in the restroom of the train, and the baby was blue. Evans and a passenger who was a nurse used items from passengers and the first aid kit to clear the baby's mouth and airway so the baby could breathe.
• Isaac Diaz, Fort Leonard Wood, is receiving the Military Lifesaver award for saving the life of a soldier who froze after dropping a live grenade during training. Diaz grabbed the soldier, took him out of the training bay and fell on top of him to protect him. Diaz received the Soldier's Medal for his actions.
• Lt. Bruce Britt, Columbia Fire Department, received the Firefighter Lifesaver award posthumously. He suffered fatal injuries on Feb. 22 when a walkway at University Village collapsed while he was assisting residents.
• Tom Shands is receiving the Volunteer of the Year award. He has worked with Red Cross since 1976 and has been a health and safety instructor, Disaster Action Team member, shelter manager, disaster instructor, liaison and mentor for others to follow.
