Your Opinion: Concerns about Right to Farm

Your Opinion: Concerns about Right to Farm

July 30th, 2014 by Dale Reichel, Jefferson City in News

Dear Editor:

Isn't everyone in Missouri that can and wants to farm already farming? Why do we need an amendment to guarantee the right to farm? Sounds suspicious to me.

Margot Ford McMillen says in her piece in the Progressive Populist paper Aug. 1, vol 20, No. 13, that "In the relentless march to take the production of food out of the hands of communities and put it in the hands of corporations, we zoom in on Mid-Missouri, an area ripe for corporate plunder. We have good water, good air and a nice quality family life way of life."

When we go to the polls on Aug. 5 we could be handing that all over to industry.

It sounds benign but Missouri already has a law guaranteeing farmers the right to farm. It is Section 537.295 of the Missouri Revised Statutes. Look it up and read it folks.

Amendment 1 is backed by both Monsanto and Cargill I hear so we can expect lots of money in this August vote.

The Missouri Farmers Union and others oppose this amendment.

Our federal Supreme Court has voted to let corporations have rights like citizens - Citizens United. Our supreme court has become polarized or biased. You can just about know how they will vote now days.

We the people is becoming less and less important. Money rules, money is king.

If Amendment 1 passes there will probably be no controls over where CAFOs can be located. No zoning, no county ordinances could protect the neighborhood.

Missourians, you better read and inquire on this amendment you may be giving a lot away with a yes vote.

On Aug. 5 the Right to Farm may be the Right to Harm.
