Your Opinion: Abolish the death penalty

Dear Editor:

After hearing about the cruel and inhumane execution of a human being in Arizona, I would like to point out that if this had happened to a pet, the whole world would be up in arms.

What has happened to the sacredness of human life and the sensitivity to human suffering? How can the state allow this to happen and call it justice?

My prayer is that the United States can join the countries in Europe who do not believe in the heinous practice of the death penalty. It is so scandalous that we belong to the group of countries who support the death penalty. Just Google it to find out who they are.

We need to abolish this outrageous eye-for-an-eye mentality. If we don't want to think of the person we're executing, then think of the monumental waste of money once the death penalty is given, i.e. the years of appeals.

It is a fact that the death penalty is more expensive that life in prison.

Think of the efficiency of the judicial system if every first degree murder conviction was automatically given life in prison with no possibility of parole.

Finished, done, that's the end of it - no appeals! How sensible is that!
