JC man arrested in child custody case

A child custody dispute led to the arrest of a man for weapons charges and domestic violence Sunday night in Jefferson City.

Police reports show Rufus Williams Jr., 21, was arrested before midnight in the 1100 block of Cordell Avenue for unlawful use of a weapon, a felon in possession of a gun and second-degree domestic violence.

Williams refused to return his 18-month-old son to the child's mother. The infant lives with his mother.

The parents have no court-ordered custody agreement.

The mother dropped the child off to visit his father this weekend. When Williams later told her that he was keeping the child, the mother confronted him and demanded the boy's return.

The mother said Williams threatened to hit her if she didn't leave and pointed a gun at her.

She left and called police.

Williams peacefully surrendered and went to jail while the child was returned to his mother.

No weapon was recovered.
