Your Opinion: Inquiry needed in capital case

Dear Editor:

On July 16, the state of Missouri is set to execute John Middleton. While the rest of the nation is moving away from the death penalty, Missouri has executed eight individuals in the last nine months. This is disturbing.

In this case newly discovered evidence raises doubt about Middleton's involvement in the crime. Prosecutors suppressed a witness statement that pointed to the guilt of another meth dealer. That meth dealer was later paid to testify against Middleton.

Gov. Nixon should appoint a board of inquiry to examine these claims. It would be a travesty of justice if the wrong person is executed.
