JC man charged with stealing metal

A Jefferson City man is charged with stealing scrap metal from a local business.

David Johnson, 48, of 1625 Jefferson St., is charged with one count of felony stealing.

A Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement in March shows employees at Al Scheppers Motor Company on Southridge Drive heard a loud noise coming from the outside of the building.

The employees saw a tan van leaving the area. The van was driven by Johnson and was carrying items from the business.

An employee of the business was able to locate the stolen items at a recycling business in Cole County.

While all this was taking place, Johnson came back to the recycling business and he was taken into custody.

The items stolen from Scheppers were valued at around $1,000.

Johnson denied taking the items, saying he had found them in Holts Summit.

He has prior convictions for first-degree assault, felony stealing, narcotics and resisting arrest. At the time of his arrest he was wanted on a warrant from New Florence for failure to appear on a criminal charge in their court.
