St. Mary's Health Center (SMHC) welcomed Jefferson City's first baby of 2014 at 3:08 p.m. New Year's Day.
Zephan James Delaney weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces and was 20 inches long. He's the first child of Caitlin and Joshua Delaney of Eldon.
Caitlin said Zephan wasn't due until Jan. 5, so his early arrival was quite a surprise.
Mom and baby should be discharged from SMHC this morning.
Heather Feeler, marketing and communications specialist at SMHC, said this birth is unique because Zephan is the last New Year's baby to be born in the old hospital.
By this time next year, SMHC will be moved into its new facility at Missouri 179 and Mission Drive.
Capital Region Medical Center (CRMC) welcomed its first baby - Shane Michael Womochil - Thursday morning to parents Jamie and Howard Womochil. He was 6 pounds, 12 ounces and 19 inches long.
With the onset of 2014, the two hospitals reflect on a busy 2013 in their obstetrics departments.
Amy Berendzen, director of marketing and public relations at CRMC, said 2013 was the second busiest year ever for the hospital's OB department.
"We delivered 926 babies in 2013, the second highest year for babies behind 982 in 2007," she said.
SMHC delivered 625 babies in 2013, which Feeler said is more than usual.
