Crusaders advance pair to state

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Helias Crusaders will have two wrestlers at this week's Class 3 state wrestling tournament after concluding district action Saturday at Staley High School.

Nick Gaines at 106 pounds and Jacob Schulte at 138 both finished in the top four of their respective weight classes to advance to the state tournament, which starts Thursday at Mizzou Arena.

Gaines (28-12), a freshman, finished 3-2 in the tournament to take fourth. All of his wins came by fall, including one in 3:32 against Collin Abersold of Kearney in his go-or-go home match.

Schulte (31-12), a junior, also was 3-2 in districts to finish fourth. In his go-or-go home match Saturday, Schulte scored a 12-1 major decision against Cameron Stenner of Liberty North.

Helias finished 10th in the final team standings with 36 points. Staley won team honors with 252 points, with Kearney second at 211 and Platte County third with 133. A total of 14 teams took part in the tournament.

The Class 3 state tournament will start at 5 p.m. Thursday.
