The court has granted an extension for the mental evaluation of a Holts Summit teen accused of murdering his grandmother in January 2012.
Judge Kevin Crane gave Missouri Department of Mental Health an additional 30 days to complete an evaluation for Ryan Koebel during a case review Monday at the Callaway County Courthouse.
Koebel, 19, is charged with first degree murder and four counts of armed criminal action and three counts of assaulting a law enforcement officer.
In January 2012, Koebel admitted to authorities that he fatally stabbed and shot his grandmother, Karen K. Cates, on Jan. 20, 2012, while having an argument.
According to the probable cause statement, Koebel reported that he stabbed Cates two times, then located a .38 caliber handgun and shot her several times before leaving the house with the gun. While walking alongside U.S. 54, Koebel allegedly pointed that gun at drivers, at a Missouri State Highway Patrol vehicle and at law enforcement officers.
Koebel was living with his grandparents at the time, and was being home schooled.
Another case review is scheduled for March 7. Koebel is set to be tried on the murder and assault charges on May 12.
