Westminster sweeps Iowa Wesleyan

FULTON - The Westminster Blue Jays completed a three-game sweep against Iowa Wesleyan in a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletics Association series, which concluded on Sunday.

Westminster opened the series with a 13-1 win, before putting together a ninth-inning rally to edge the Tigers 15-14 in Game 2 on Saturday.

The Blue Jays finished off Iowa Wesleyan with a 7-3 win on Sunday, improving to 20-11 overall and 14-9 in the conference.

Deion Hughes (Helias High School) had seven hits, including a home run, and tallied six RBI to lead Westminster at the plate. Danton Hughes (Helias High School) added six hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs to help pace the offense.

Deion Hughes (8-0) was also the winning pitcher in Game 1 of the series, throwing five scoreless inning, allowing two hits and striking out seven.

Seth Lehmen (Fatima High School) threw two innings in the opener, allowing one run on four hits.

Miller Bowles (Southern Boone High School) pitched 5 2/3 innings in Game 2, surrendering one run on two hits with four strikeouts.

Ryan Loethen (St. Elizabeth High School) had five hits and two RBI, while Cam Backes (Tipton High School) had four hits and Nolan Bax (Fatima High School) chipped in with two hits in the series.

Westminster will host No. 2 Webster University at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
