Commission approves Capital 8 Theaters expansion

A planned expansion and renovations to the Capital 8 Theaters have been approved by the Jefferson City Planning and Zoning Commission.

At the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting Thursday, the commission approved a preliminary planned unit development (or PUD) plan amendment for the Capital 8 Theaters, which plans for an expansion to accommodate a ninth screen to the theater and bring stadium-style seating to the other eight theaters.

An 8,253-square-foot addition to the 3550 Country Club Drive property would make room for a ninth theater, set to house a GDX or Giant Digital Experience, 65-foot screen with Atmos sound, and room to seat 450. Plans also include renovations to the lobby, concessions and box office.

William Brunner, with Paradigm Design, out of Grand Rapids, Mich., said the renovation also would include a new event room.

The addition would use an existing piece of land to the south of the building and is estimated take nine months for building and retrofitting, during which the theater will remain open.

Other small changes will be made to the theater's exterior, including new signage and LED lighting.

"Basically, you're getting a new theater in town with this," Brunner said.
